The Essence of the Gospel We Proclaim #7
"The Ordinance of Baptism"
What role does baptism play in the role of the gospel? The word in the New Testament is used many times to describe several different types of baptisms: the baptism of Moses, the baptism of John, the baptism of our Lord, the baptism of the cross, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the baptism of judgment and the baptism of believers.
The word means to "to dip, immerse, submersion." This is scene in the account of the baptism of Jesus and the Ethiopian eunuch when it says of both they "went down into the water" and "came up out of the water."
But what is the importance of this water baptism in relation to the gospel?
First, let’s say what baptism is not:
It is not conversion.
It is not washing your sins away
It is not the most important thing
It is not essential to go to heaven
It is not the assurance of your salvation
But baptism is a powerful tool of the proclamation of the gospel.
I. Public Confession of a personal Experience
Acts 8 we see that the man wanted to be baptized after trusting Christ.
II. Proclamation of Christ’s Death, Burial and Resurrection
This is a dramatization of what has saved you.
III. Picture of What Has Happened to You
Romans 6:5 –7 "For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7For he who has died has been freed from sin."
IV. Promise of What Will Happen to You
Romans 6: 3-4 "Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."
V. Partnership with the People and Message of God
John baptized because it was a way of identifying with him as a teacher and his message. This is one of the reasons Jesus wanted John to baptize him because he believed in his message.
VI. Proper Order of Baptism
Baptism comes after believing.
Acts 8: 36-37
VII. Priority of Baptism
Baptism is important because it reveals a heart of obedience.
Acts 2: 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
