John 1: 13
The Essence of the Gospel We Proclaim #4
"God’s Way of Salvation"
There is one way of salvation. The holiness of God and sinfulness of man coupled with the person and work of Jesus Christ demands only one way to come and have a relationship with God that will result in having everlasting life now and living eternally with God in heaven.
We see the necessity of this one-way in John 1:13.
Salvation is not by our birth
Salvation is not by our works (See Romans 3:20, Galatians 2:16, Ephesians 2:8-9, II Timothy 1:9, Titus 3:5)
Salvation is not by our initiation and/or decision
Salvation is of God alone.
I. The Way of Repentance
Luke 13: 3 "I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."
I Thess. 1:9 "For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,…"
Repentance is an acknowledgement (mind)
We acknowledge we are sinners. Repentance is not just naming a sin or a list of sins. But acknowledge that we produce dead works and dirty works and can’t do otherwise.
We turn from our self-righteousness and from self-ability to abandon our ways totally turning only and wholly to God. Jesus is not a try, that’s not repentance.
Repentance is a turning from and turning to (will)
Repentance is not just remorse or feeling sorry (although that will be present in genuine repentance but that alone is not repentance), but a redirection of our will.
The Greek word "METANOIA" (#3341) means, "to have another mind, think differently, or change of mind."
Thus, repentance is not simply feeling sorry or guilty but involves a change
II. The Way of Saving Faith
True repentance will include saving faith.
A. Saving faith is placing your trust and reliance in what Jesus did for me.
II Corinthians 5:21 "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."
Galatians 3:13 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"),
You trust His person and His payment for your sins. The debt is paid. I owe nothing. Your view of salvation is either a promissory note or paid in full.
B. Saving faith is a continuing faith in Him.
This faith is not a one-time act of believing, but a current, an on-going faith and reliance. This faith is a result of repentance (knowing the way you were going was wrong and fully relying on the way of Christ). There is nothing to go back to. The old way is a way of death and destruction. If you can go back, then you were not saved to begin with.
John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." The word used here for "believes" and 14 other places in John is a present tense, which means a current faith, not a one-time experience.
III. The Way of Acknowledging Jesus as Lord
Since the old way is wrong and the way of Jesus is the only way, which is an acknowledging that He alone is Lord.
Acts 2:36 ""Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
Acts 16:31 "So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household."
Romans 10:13 "For "whoever calls
on the name of the Lord shall be saved."Romans 10:9 "that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
You can’t separate the Lordship of Jesus Christ from the salvation of Christ.
IV. The Way is for Everyone
There are not many ways to Heaven, but one.
Romans 10: 12 "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him."
Acts 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
You can’t be saved because salvation is not of man, its of God. You will never be saved thinking its something you can do. You must accept the gift of God. It is God who gives you the gift of repentance (II Timothy 2:25) and the gift of faith (Romans 12:3). Its not by your birth, works or decision, but of God.
Will you repent and believe or continue on your way? Receive it or reject it. A non-decision is a blatant refusal of Jesus Christ.
