The Essence of the Gospel We Proclaim #3

"The Person of Jesus"

In our previous two messages we have seen the reason why the gospel is necessary: God is a perfect God who requires all who go to Heaven to be perfect and man is totally sinful without any ability on his own to do good. Thus, there is a great schism, gulf that must be reconciled if God and man ever have a relationship.

This is where the good news begins: Jesus Christ is our salvation. He is God and man thus is able to bring the two together in Himself.

There has been much debate in the last ten years about "Who is Jesus?" The search for the historical Jesus. It is the most vital question that one can ask, "Who is Jesus?" Your answer is essential to your eternal destination.

But who is Jesus according to the Bible? Let’s look at just three simple facts:

Jesus is God

I Timothy 3:16 "God was manifested in the flesh."

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was God."

This Jesus is the God of the Old Testament.

Exodus 3:14 "And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’"

In the book of John, Jesus identified himself, as "I am the bread of life, the light of the world, the resurrection and the life."

John 8: 58 "Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

John 8: 24 "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."

Romans 9:5 "of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen."

Colossians 2:9 "For in Him dwells all the fullness of the God-head bodily;"

John 10:30 "I and my Father are one."

He is God.

Jesus is Man

John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."

Matthew 1 indicates that Jesus did not have an earthly father but only an earthly mother. Matthew 1:16 "And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ."

Then note in Matthew 2 the references to "the young child and His mother." No reference to a father. (Matthew 2: 13-14, 20-21)

Galatians 4:4 "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,"

Hebrews 2:17 "Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people."

He was circumcised, grew in stature and wisdom, wept, was hungry, thirsty, sleepy, became weary, was a man of sorrows, was beaten and scoured, and died. How much more human can you get than that?

Hebrews 4:15 "but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin."

Even his enemies said of him, John 18:38 "Pilate went out to the Jews, and said to them, ‘I find no fault in Him at all."

I John 3:5 "And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin."

Jesus became our substitute

II Corinthians 5: 21 "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."

Hebrews 2:17 "Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people."

Mark 10:45 "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

He is our Mediator

I Timothy 2:5 "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus."

Ephesians 2: 13-18 "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 18For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father."

Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Isaiah 53:6 "All we like sheep have gone astray;

We have turned, every one, to his own way;

And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."

I Peter 2: 24 "who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness."

"Dear Lord, I recognize I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I know you are the Son of God who loves me and has made a way for me to have a relationship with God. Forgive me of my sin and change my life. I believe in Christ alone for my salvation. I give Jesus the control of my life and will follow Him the rest of my life, in Jesus name."
